What Drives Prototype Cost?

Understanding the factors that shape your quote.

One of the most common questions we hear is, “How much does a prototype cost?” The answer depends on several factors, many of which aren't obvious from the finished model.

So, what actually goes into a prototype, and how does that shape our quotes?

The Biggest Driver Affecting Prototype Pricing: Labor

Making something that’s never been made before simply takes time. We’re not a box store; we aren’t making something you can pick up from Target or Walmart. We’re custom fabricating your unique, beautiful product to your exact specifications.

Clients see a gorgeous end product, not the behind-the-scenes hours that go into making it. They rarely get a peek behind the curtain to witness how meticulous (and often tedious) some of the work is—especially when it comes to custom finishing. It’s intense, manual labor, done by hand with a quality and attention to detail that we’ve developed over the past 45+ years.

And if that product eventually makes its way to store shelves? Then our job is done.

Finish Complexity

Think of it like ordering from a custom menu—the more specialized the finish, the more time, materials, and craftsmanship required. Custom masking, graphics, tints, textures, gloss levels, and specialty coatings can all add time and cost, not to mention achieving the desired look may require specific substrates and additional finishing processes.

The difference between a gloss and matte finish, for example, might seem inconsequential on the surface, but they can require very different finishing processes. A high-gloss clearcoat involves additional sanding and buffing to achieve that perfectly polished appearance, while matte or textured finishes are generally more forgiving and hide minor surface irregularities. What may seem like a simple aesthetic choice can have a meaningful impact on the time required to produce the finished prototype.

Custom Color

Creating a prototype with the right combination of colors and finishes is not only exciting, but it can also strengthen brand recognition and add tremendous value to your product. It’s a splash of magic.

But when we’re asked to develop custom colors from scratch, we can’t just reference a database. It takes time and patience. It is a chemical formulation that sometimes takes several revisions to look exactly right.

We are experts in color creation, and we love doing it. It’s absolutely worth the investment.

Tight turnaround time

When applying graphics, the shape of the object can be an important factor. Prototypes often have intricate shapes, tight corners, and other complexities that can make adding a graphic a massive hurdle.

Some areas will be difficult to reach or have features in the way; others will need graphics that are durable enough to survive on exposed surfaces that are the most handled.

And after all that? Everything needs to fit and function properly.

Let’s Work Within Your Budget.

There’s a lot of hidden work that goes into creating exceptional prototypes, but we try to make it look easy. We want to realize your vision with a stunning product that gets stakeholders excited, at a cost that fits your price point. Understanding the factors that influence prototype cost helps you make informed decisions about materials, finishes, timelines, and development priorities. Helping us understand your budget up front helps us figure out the best path forward.

Together, let’s identify the right materials, processes, and finishes to keep your project on budget without sacrificing value.
